A fresh start: GUIs, a new design, and plans for the site
Hey everyone, it’s been a while. I’m still not entirely sure what I want to post on this website, but I do want to expand outside of electronics. Eventually I’d like to get a photo gallery going, and maybe some short articles on making things.
A lot has happened since I last wrote any material for this site, as it’s been over 14 years now! I want to start writing more though, even about the minor tips and tricks we all re-discover each day. If for nothing more than just posterity and to help anyone else who might need it.
I also want to say that I appreciate the kind words folks have when they discover PySceneDetect or DVR-Scan. Your feedback is so valuable to keeping these projects moving in the right direction.
Shipping a GUI for DVR-Scan was really challenging at first, but I’m glad we got it done with a very batteries included approach using minimal dependencies. That sort of thing is really important to me as a developer and maintainer of the software. I also thank the contributors to these projects for their support.
Both projects now widely used in to scientific research, being cited in hundreds of research publications since their release. PySceneDetect is used a lot when doing research into video ingestion for artificial intelligence. DVR-Scan on the other hand covers a whole variety of topics, from cellular biology to traffic monitoring. I’m also glad to see the applications it has in medical research and wildlife research. The world is an amazing and interesting place - I can’t wait to see what comes next.
As for me, things have been positive. I’ve met the love of my life, and we’re building a quiet cozy happy life together. She’s also the most intelligent, beautiful, and engaging woman I have ever met.
I want to create a GUI for PySceneDetect eventually, and would love to come up with an excuse to do so in Rust. eGUI seems pretty promising, but I do wish it was easier to make “native-like” cross platform applications more easily. This seems to be something a lot of other people want too.
